Valentine’s Day Meme Assignment

The Power of Myth and Star Wars
Valentine’s Day Meme Assignment

I know you know what a meme is, but a standard understanding is:

An Internet meme is a concept or idea that spreads "virally" from one person to another via the Internet. An Internet meme could be anything from an image to an email or video file; however, the most common meme is an image of a person or animal with a funny or witty caption. The proliferation of social media has led to Internet memes spreading very quickly and reaching more people.
Many Internet memes use humor and appeal largely to the adolescent and post-adolescent demographic: this demographic is much more likely to discover Internet memes, understand the humor behind them and be willing to forward it on to friends.
One of the most famous Internet memes is "LOLcat," which features cute pictures of cats with witty or funny captions.

Memes involve IRONY:

Verbal irony:               the use of words to mean something different than what they appear to
Situational irony:        the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually   happens
Dramatic irony:           when the audience is more aware of what is happening than a character

THE ASSIGNMENT:

Your job is to create a Star Wars Valentine’s Day meme that includes irony (any of the three types).  It must be appropriate for the school setting.

Grading criteria:

Picture (10 pts). The picture must be related to Star Wars. It must be clear and school appropriate. Any image subject to copyright must be cited correctly (you can add this to the back of the meme).

The Writing (10 pts). The phrase must creatively relate the picture to an element present in the Star Wars saga.

If you would like to submit this electronically via Google docs or PowerPoint, that would be great.

It’s due February 15th…
